Very Simple Techniques to grow your ‘Word Tower’

Have you ever stumbled upon the thought that some people around you seem to know so many words? Have you ever thought about how they naturally use these words in their conversations and it sounds so good and different? Well! This is actually not by luck or chance! It is all about practice, practice, and practice! Some of you might have given it a thought to build up your word tower, right? So, what is stopping you then?

‘Words’ in simple language, refers to a collection of alphabets that makes up a meaning. For example- bag, tiffin box, tree, birds, watch, laptop, book, etc. But the kind of ‘word tower’ we are talking about here is to ‘ build up your vocabulary’. Do you know that the more you have it the more it gives you the power to express yourself in a polished way? Yes! It does. It also helps you to be confident enough to speak, write, and understand different things without any difficulty.

There are a number of sources from which you can gain this superpower. They can be any, like,

- by reading a book

- by reading a comic

- by observing daily conversation

- by listening to news

- by listening to radio

- by following the commentators

- by observing your teacher, etc.

There are lakhs of words in the world. It is obviously not easy to memorise all of them. But, there are certain simple, yet effective techniques, with the help of which you can make your vocabulary strong enough. Some of them are as follows-

  1. ‘Word of the Day’: Every day, you pick up a different word you wish to learn about. Take out its meaning and understand it. After that, try to write it down in a notebook and frame a sentence with the help of the word. Say it aloud and you will see your dictionary will expand within a few months!

  1. ‘Word mapping’: This is a very interesting technique. Here, you write down a word in the middle of a paper and then draw outward branches for different sections like synonyms (words that have a similar meaning, such as- synonyms of happy is joyful, cheerful, etc), antonyms ( words whose meanings are opposite to each other, for example- antonym of happy is sad), and a sentence.

  1. ‘Word Game’: Try to do something different when you are with your family or friends. Try to play the ‘word game’. Here, you can pick up a word first and say it aloud. The person sitting next to you can pick up the last letter of the word and utter a different word out of that last letter and this can be continued. So, in this way you will get the opportunity to collect and learn more words.

  1. Try to maintain a ‘Word Journal’: This technique is another fine and classic one! Whenever you hear a different word or read it somewhere, try to write it down in your notebook and try to find out its meaning. After that, try to frame a sentence with the word or draw a picture of it. This will make your learning active.

  1. New words in conversations: Try to bring down new words that you have learned about, in your day to day conversations. You should try to replace certain common words with the new words while speaking to your family, friends, neighbours, teachers, etc. You will see that your way of delivering speech or talking to people will get better day by day.

So! Are you ready to build up your word tower now?
